It wasn’t just a sci-fi show about aliens and government conspiracies. It was a show about fear, loneliness, belief, power, and the uncomfortable feeling that something bigger is happening behind the scenes while ordinary people are left trying to figure it out.

What always stood out to me was the atmosphere. The darkness. The uncertainty. The tension of not fully knowing what was real. The show trusted the audience enough to sit in mystery instead of explaining everything away. That’s something a lot of modern television still struggles with.

Mulder and Scully also grounded the series emotionally. One wanted to believe. The other needed proof. Neither of them were fully right or wrong, and that balance made the stories feel human even when they became bizarre or terrifying.

I think the reason the show still resonates today is because the themes never stopped being relevant. Distrust in institutions. Hidden agendas. Isolation. Technology evolving faster than humanity can emotionally process. Those ideas are even more relatable now than they were in the 90s.

As a writer and producer, I’m always drawn to stories that use genre to explore real human emotions and social fears. The best sci-fi and horror stories aren’t really about monsters or aliens. They’re about us — how we react under pressure, what we fear, what we hide, and what we choose to believe.

That’s why The X-Files still works. Beneath all the paranormal mystery, it understood people.

Why The X-Files Still Works Today: There’s a reason people still talk about The X-Files decades later.
